Exposing the Censors

The Censorship Industrial Complex is spreading across the globe. Politicians everywhere are passing or are on the cusp of passing sweeping new laws, which would allow governments to censor ordinary citizens on social media and other Internet platforms. All this is under the guise of preventing “harm” and holding large tech companies accountable. Now, we're naming names. Here are some of the elected officials, bureaucrats, academics and others who are promoting censorship. Their actions need to be scrutinized, and free speech needs to be protected.

  • Renée DiResta

    Renée DiResta is a writer and research manager at Stanford Internet Observatory (SIO). She investigates the spread of malign narratives across social networks and assists policymakers in understanding and responding to the problem. She has written about pseudoscience, conspiracies, terrorism, and state-sponsored information warfare. She has also served as an advisor to the U.S. Congress on ongoing efforts to prevent online and social media disinformation. Before joining SIO, she was the Director of Research at Yonder (formerly named New Knowledge) and a founder member of Haven, a logistics company. She also worked for the Central Intelligence Agency.

    Iria Puyosa is a political communication scholar with expertise on information warfare in social media, technopolitical controls, erosion of democracy, and networked social movements in Latin America. She is currently a senior research fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab leading a project on encrypted point-to-point messaging platforms.
